Clos Du Val

Clos Du Val

Clos Du Val is a prime example of what amazing hospitality can do. Our first visit to Clos was over 5 years ago, when we still lived in Chicago, and traveled to Napa for the first time with a group of 14 people. We had a great guide, Nik, who gave us a candid and informative tour that ended in a special room for us to taste in. They had a “Happy Birthday” sign prepared for a few people in our group and were generous with their pours. In fact, this first trip to Clos Du Val was part of what inspired this blog; we had such a great experience which can be hard to find in a larger group. Here’s a fun picture from our first visit :)

Since that first trip, Clos Du Val has undergone a major renovation, adding on a gorgeous, modern building to act as their tasting room space. We went recently to see the new space (and our old friends!).

The rooms are full of color and relaxed seating. We loved the texture on the walls and ceiling which is actually wood from old wine barrels! The highlight of the space is the view out the glass wall on to the patio, Napa Valley and the mountains in the distance. It was a little chilly while we were there, so we didn’t get to sit outside for our tasting, but this outdoor space is a can’t miss when the weather is right.

We got to taste with Victoria for this visit and we can’t say enough how much we enjoyed talking to her, both about wine and life in general. Each time we’ve visited Clos Du Val we have met the most warm, interesting people. Another consistent detail from our previous visit - a welcome message to us personally on our tasting menu! This team really goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome.

Another thing we love about Clos Du Val is the winery’s history and of course, the wine. Ask them about the Judgement of Paris, a wine competition that changed the way the world thinks about wines from the US and California in the 1970’s. Needless to say, Clos Du Val ranked well at that competition and continues to produce fantastic wines today. The wines coupled with their beautiful new tasting room make for a lovely stop while you’re in Napa.
